2011 Census of India is the 15th Indian Census conducted by Census Organization of India.

The first every Census was conducted in 1871 and Census of India has been conducted every 10 years.

After India's Independence, Census has been conducted by Registrar General and Census Commissioner of India under Home Ministry of Government of India.

2011 Census of India has been conducted by C Chandramouli, Registrar General and Census Commissioner of India on 31 March 2011.

The number of administrative units covered in 2011 Census of India are 28 states and 7 union territories of India, 640 districts, 5767 tehsils, 7933 towns and more than 6 lakh villages.

The 2011 Census data was collected in 16 languages and the manual for training was prepared in 18 languages of India.

2011 Census was carried in two phases:

  1. Phase 1 : Houselisting and Housing Census phase
  2. Phase 2 : Population Enumeration phase

The motto of 2011 Census was 'Our Census, Our future'.

The population of India has increased by more than 181 million during the decade 2001-2011.

  7. Most Populous State : Uttar Pradesh (199 lakhs)
  8. Second Most Populous State : Maharashtra (112 lakhs)
  9. Top Five Populous State : Uttar Pradesh , Maharashtra, Bihar, West Bengal and Andhra Pradesh
  10. Most Populous Union Territories : Delhi(16 lakh)
  11. Least Populous State : Sikkim (6 lakh)
  12. Least Populous Union Territories : Lakshadweep (64 thousand)
  13. Highest Populous District : Thane in Maharashtra(1,10,54,131)
  14. Second Highest Populous District : North Twenty Four Parganas in West Bengal (1,00,82,852)

There are six religions in India that have been awarded "National Minority" status - Muslims, Christians, Sikhs, Jains, Buddhists and Parsis. Sunnis, Shias, Bohras, Agakhanis and Ahmadiyyas were identified as sects of Islam in India.

For the first time, a "No religion" category was added in the 2011 census.

Maharashtra is having the highest number of atheists in the country with 9,652 such people, followed by Meghalaya (9,089) and Kerala.
