The President of the Republic of India is the Head of State of the Republic of India and the Commander-in-chief of the Indian Armed Forces.

The President of the Republic is elected by the people through elected members of both the houses of the Parliament of India, the Legislative Assemblies of all the states of the Republic of India and the Legislative Assembly of the Union Territory of Puducherry, as well as, the Legislative Assembly of the National Capital Territory of Delhi.The President serves for a term of five years.

The President takes an oath in the presence of the Chief Justice of India, and in his/her absence, by the senior judge of the Supreme Court of the Republic of India.

The President of the Republic India resides in Rashtrapati Bhavan situated in Raisina Hill in New Delhi.

The presidential retreat is The Retreat in Chharabra, Shimla and Rashtrapati Nilayam (President's Place) in Hyderabad

Dr. Rajendra Prasad
India's 1st President
Term at office : 26th January 1950 to 14th May 1962
Born : 3rd December 1884
Died : 28th February 1963
Political party : Indian National Congress

Dr. Rajendra Prasad was the first president of Republic India.

He was the only president to serve two terms in office from 26 January 1950 to 14 May 1962.

He was a supporter of Mahatma Gandhi and was imprisoned during the Salt Satyagraha of 1931 and the Quit India movement of 1942.

He was awarded the Bharat Ratna Awards in 1962.


Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan
India's 2nd President
Term at office : 14th May 1962 to 13th May 1967
Born : 5th September 1888
Died : 17th April 1975
Political party : Independent

Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishna became the second President of Republic India.

He was the first Vice President of India who was a philosopher.

He was awarded the Bharat Ratna Awards in 1954.

His birthday is celebrated as "Teachers' Day" on 5th September in India.

Dr Zakir Husain
India's 3rd President

Born : 8th February 1897
Died : 3rd May 1969
Political party : Independent

Dr Zakir Husain was the third President of the Republic India.

Husain became first Muslim President of Republic India, and also the first to die in office.

Before becoming President, he served as Governor of Bihar from 1957 to 1962 and second Vice President of India from 1962 to 1967.

Zakir Husain was also co-founder of Jamia Milia Islamia.

He was awarded the Bharat Ratna, India's highest civilian award, in 1963.

Varahagiri Venkata Giri (V.V.Giri) was appointed as Acting President of India after sudden demise of Dr Zakir Husain.

Varahagiri Venkata Giri became the fourth President of Republic India.

He also served as Acting President of India after the death of president Zakir Hussian.

He was elected the third Vice President of India.

He was the first Vice President who have not complete his full term in office on account of being placed to the office of the President.

He was the third Vice President to be elected to the Presidency.

He has functioned as Indian Minister of Labour and High Commissioner to Ceylon (Sri Lanka).

Giri was honoured with the Bharat Ratna in 1975 for contributions in public affairs.


Dr Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed
India's 5th President
Term at office : 24th August 1974 to 11th February 1977
Born : 13th May 1905
Died : 11th February 1977
Political party : Indian National Congress

Dr Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed was the fifth President of India and the 2nd President of India to die in office.

He became the second Muslim to be elected as a President of India.

Basappa Danappa Jatti was the vice president of India during Ahmed's term of office, and was sworn as Acting President of India after Ahmed's death.


Neelam Sanjiva Reddy
India's 6th President
Term at office : 25th July 1977 to 25th July 1982
Born : 19th May 1913
Died : 1st June 1996
Political party : Janata Party

Neelam Sanjiva Reddy became the sixth President of India.

He was the youngest Presidents to be elected at the age of 65.

N.S. Reddy was the first Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh State and two times Speaker of the Lok Sabha.


Giani Zail Singh
India's 7th President
Term at office : 25th July 1982 to 25th July 1987
Born : 5th May 1916
Died : 25th December 1994
Political party : Indian National Congress

Giani Zail Singh was the seventh President of India serving from 1982 to 1987.

Prior to his presidency, He was a politician with the Indian National Congress party, and had held several ministerial posts in the Union Cabinet as Home Minister.

His presidency was marked by Operation Blue Star, the assassination of Indira Gandhi, and the 1984 anti-Sikh riots.


Ramaswamy Venkataraman
India's 8th President

Died : 27th January 2009
Political party : Indian National Congress

Ramaswamy Venkataraman was the eighth President of India who also served as a Union minister, prior to president.

Venkataraman was also the seventh Vice-President of India.

The title of "Sat Seva Ratna" was conferred on him by His Holiness the Sankaracharya of Kancheepuram.He was a devotee of the Paramacharya of Kanchi.

He was elected to Lok Sabha four times and served as Union Finance Minister and Defence Minister.

Dr Shankar Dayal Sharma
India's 9th President
Term at office : 25th July 1992 to 25th July 1997
Born : 19th August 1918
Died : 26th December 1999
Political party : Indian National Congress

Dr Shankar Dayal Sharma was the ninth President of India, serving from 1992 to 1997.

Prior to his presidency, he had been the eighth Vice President of India.

Sharma was Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh, and the Indian Minister for Communications. He has also served as the governor of Andhra Pradesh, Punjab and Maharashtra.

The International Bar Association presented Sharma with the 'Living Legends of Law Award of Recognition' for his outstanding contribution to the legal profession internationally and for commitment to the rule of law.


Kocheril Raman Narayanan
India's 10th President
Term at office : 25th July 1997 to 25th July 2002
Born : 27th October 1920
Died : 9th November 2005
Political party : Indian National Congress

Kocheril Raman Narayanan was elected the tenth president of India and also the first Dalit President.

He was elected as the ninth Vice President.

Narayanan served as India's ambassador to Thailand, Turkey, China and United States of America.


Dr Avul Pakir Jainulabdeen "A. P. J." Abdul Kalam
India's 11th President
Term at office : 25th July 2002 to 25th July 2007
Born : 15th October 1931
Died : 27th July 2015 in Shillong

Dr Kalam was the eleventh President of India from 2002 to 2007.

Prior to President, he worked decades as a scientist and science administrator, at the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and was intimately involved in India's civilian space programme and military missile development efforts.

He was known as the Missile Man of India for his work on the development of ballistic missile Prithvi and launch vehicle technology.He also played important role in India's Pokhran-II nuclear tests in 1998.

He was also the first scientist and the first bachelor to occupy Rashtrapati Bhawan.

Dr Kalam was known as the People's President.

The state government of Tamil Nadu announced his birthday, 15th October,to be observed across the state as "Youth Renaissance Day;"

The Government of India honoured him with the Padma Bhushan in 1981 and the Padma Vibhushan in 1990 for his work with ISRO and DRDO and as a scientific advisor to the Government. In 1997, Kalam received India's highest civilian honour, the Bharat Ratna, for his contribution to the scientific research and modernisation of defence technology in India.

While delivering a lecture at the Indian Institute of Management Shillong, Kalam collapsed and died from an cardiac arrest on 27th July 2015.

Pratibha Devisingh Patil
India's 12th President

Pratibha Devisingh Patil is the twelfth President of India from 25 July 2007 to 25 July 2012.

She was India's first woman to become the President of India.

She was also the first female Governor of Rajasthan.

Dr. Pranab Kumar Mukherjee was the thirteenth President of India from 25 July 2012 to 25 July 2017.

He became the first Bengali to be President of India.

Pranab Mukherjee held various posts in the Cabinet Ministry for the Government of India such as Finance Minister, Foreign Minister, Defence Minister and Deputy Chairman of the Planning Commission.

Ram Nath Kovind
India's 14th President
Term at office : 25th July 2017 to Incumbent
Born : 1st October 1945
Political party : Bharatiya Janata Party

Ram Nath Kovind is the fourteenth and current President of India.

He had served as the Governor of Bihar from 2015 to 2017 and was a Member of Parliament, Rajya Sabha from 1994 to 2006.

He became the second Dalit to be elected to the post of President.

Before entering politics, he was a lawyer for 16 years and practiced in the Delhi High Court and the Supreme Court until 1993.
